AIGAC Conference
Five Accepted.com consultants participated in the
annual professional
conference of graduate admissions consultants, sponsored by AIGAC.
Accepted’s presence, the largest of any consultancy at the
conference, reflects our commitment to excellence and professional
development.
Participants in the conference visited NYU Stern’s School of
Business and Columbia’s Graduate School of Business. They
participated in the “Beyond the Stereotypes”
session, led by Bruce DelMonico from Yale, Cassandra Pittman from
INSEAD, Christie St. John from Tuck, Peter Johnson from Haas, Soojin
Kwon Koh from Ross, and Wendy Huber from Darden, who presented about
the niche programs that the schools may not be, but should be, known
for. Peter and Christie also hosted an informative exercise using
admissions case studies. Later on, the group discussed the current MBA
applicant perspective as revealed in March’s AIGAC
survey.

Essay
Tip
"Invent
first, and then embellish!"
So advised Samuel Johnson, the eighteenth-century English curmudgeon,
wit, and writer.
Now don’t think for a minute that Dr. Johnson was advising
writers like you to make things up.
He wasn’t. He was recommending that a
writer—whether it be a young minister who had sought his
advice on writing a sermon, or you, confronting the need to write
personal statements and application
essays—should first create a working draft and then should
edit it for coherence, logic, writing mechanics,
clarity, and all the qualities that contribute to good writing. Don’t
edit as you write that first draft.
Dr. Johnson’s works are still read almost 300 years after his
death. I doubt that your personal
statement requires that kind of longevity; it just needs to work with
the rest of your application
to enhance the chances that you will be accepted to the program of your
choice.
However, Dr. Johnson’s advice is still applicable. Tell your
story. Get it down on paper.
Then edit it until it shines.
